As far as the air quality index goes, probably not so good.

At least no one can accuse you of covering your face when you are using a face mask.

Weather conditions are not very promising. And the rain that would really extinguish those fires would have to be massive.
In the meantime there have been even more people found to have laid additional fires.

23° (Tuesday) might be on the south coast. Supposed to be 30 in Sydney and 34 at the farm, except it's 34 at the farm right now and it's only 9:30 AM. I suspect it will get a fair bit warmer before mid-day.

Gusty winds and dry thunderstorms forecast and up to 40C inland. Oh lovely. Have to confess that after a while you get numb to what's happening. Acknowledging that there's a firestorm of biblical proportions just over the next hill and all the projections are that things will only keep getting worse is enough to drive you crazy.

I guess Sydney got the worst of the smoke. The air quality index was about 2000 (10 times 'dangerous') there. We were right at 'dangerous'. Our road is now closed to the public because it is the closest sealed road to the southern edge of the Blue Mountains. Beyond us it's fire trails. But these guys are pretty clever. The fire trails are strategically oriented to double as fire breaks. The beast is sort of contained at the moment, but the trick is to keep it contained when the weather changes. That's hard when you're dealing with something of this size. They've been taking in heavy equipment to create more of these fire trails and create cells of the land. Then they can defend one cell at a time. Previously they built bands around the fire but if you lose an entire band you could lose a lot of ground quickly. Cells are smaller and more easily managed. Then they will do back burns at precise times to take away fuel ahead of the critical edges and slow it down if/when it does move. I think this is aboriginal teaching, which is being taken seriously in progressive regions. Our street is the last line of defense. If it gets to our side of the road, it will be taking property in a big way and nobody wants that. I feel sorry for the neighbours on the other side of the road, because they're on the wrong side of the defensive line. But not enough to get cocky about it. We are all at risk. There are about a dozen farms tucked away in the bush between us and the blaze. They would be shitting their pants right now. We need the back burns to manage a blaze this size but they're risky. The wind needs to be moving in the right direction to move towards the main fire and you can only back burn if/when it is and stop everything if it shifts. They've also been placing water pods throughout the bushland that can be easily be picked up by choppers. Anyway, I'm immensely impressed with our local fire crews. I'm impressed with any fire crew, but I feel like the local folks really know what they're doing and I hope that all fire crews are this good. This fire is bloody bigger than anybody has seen before and these guys are "Right. We can take this thing."
My kind of people. There's a battle coming.

I don't know if there is a god... but if there is, and as rain is probably not to be expected, may he/she/it/they bless the firecrews and all the folks fighting the battle!
Stay safe, Mike!
