I wrote this list of Reasons Not To Travel in 2009. It's all still true (except I no longer live in NYC)!

I don't suffer from jet lag or illness when traveling, and I don't need alcohol for that, but she makes some interesting points. Especially about the illusion of discovery from staying short periods in a place.

Flight to Thailand from California was jetlag. Also a bit of jetlag to Germany and Brazil.

I am rarely traveling. My last international travel was 4 weeks around Christmas 2012/13. And I very much agree that this time frame is hardly enough to get an idea of a place, let alone another country, this journey has been life changing to the core. And I did a lot of reading, listening, talking since then, my learning curve had a very different quality and connection after those few weeks.
And in a way I am living there in parts, not only because JOY94.9, the Melbourne LGBTQI+ community radio and media organisation has become indispensible for me. Visiting the station and hearing those voices has been and stil is invaluable for me.
Thanks to the internet I am able to connect with people, experience cultural events, way more than I did before with just books and a shortwave radio at my disposal. And the possibilities to participate have become even more diverse during the last few months.
Even for broadcasting I no longer have to drive to a studio, I could record a show completely off grid, somewhere with no electricity. If as a bonus I had a stable internet connection using my phone or whatever I could even broadcast life from a distant forest hut at the lake. Actually that is something I am working on, and will do by next year. I still need to work on some logistics, but I am almost there. Then I will need to work on a decent concept.
I do travel a whole lot, just not physically.
