My dad used to be an early enthusiast of automatic transmission in Brazil, and in the early 90's he drove an Opel Ascona* that was already automatic. It was an optional feature, and not cheap. But today we see more and more adoption of automatic.
* sold in Brazil as 'Chevrolet Monza' ... no comments.

I think their rising popularity in Brazil is associated with traffic jams in big cities. In the case of my father he was impressed by the technology involved, and I think it helped with his back pain. In any case it is much more comfortable to be in a traffic jam with an automatic transmission. I assume it might also save you some fuel by optimizing gear shifts.

I like driving cars and trucks with manual transmissions, but I've found as I get older I prefer big cars with automatic transmissions.

I've had junkers with autos that I drove like manuals because I needed to keep the RPMs up to keep it running.

Yes, @

- there have been cars with automatic transmission in Brazil for some years now. But I cannot say in which year they started to be sold.

My current daily driver is a 2009, GDI-type turbo with a 6-speed, full manual transmission. I don't churn cars often and am still it hoping it might be the last ICE I own. When I bought it, I figured I'd like to go out the way I came in. Modern autos are fine, of course. Hardly anyone drives a manual here and there's no point in learning these days, but it's still a totally different paradigm and I love manuals, even if they're something of a fetish.
