The director, Berthold Bartosch, born in a town in the kingdom of Bohemia (now in the Czech Republic), first studied arts in Vienna, being in the same class as Adolf Hitler. After assisting in important movie productions in Berlin he came to live in Paris, where he befriends Jean Renoir and produces this first major film, as well as anti-nazi satiric animations for the German public. The Nazis would later destroy all the material of his second film during the occupation, and he died before completing his third. This is his full masterpiece, also the first movie ever to figure electronic sounds in the soundtrack
